Good Shared Mac Instance

I got a Shared Mac Cloud Instance last week. Setup was quick, maybe an hour. Everything just worked for my small project. No complaints so far, it's pretty fast.

Decent Mac Mini Hosting

I signed up for the Dedicated Mac Mini Cloud Server. The server itself is good, no issues with performance for my iOS build server needs. Latency was acceptable, and I liked having root access. The only snag was getting support on a Sunday, took a while to hear back. Not a huge deal, but something to note if you need weekend help.

Mixed feelings on VM, good support

I tried out a macOS Virtual Machine instance for a client project needing a specific Xcode Cloud Environment. The provisioning was pretty smooth, took about 2 hours to get everything live. Performance was mostly solid for development, but I noticed a bit of a slowdown during peak hours, especially with a lot of compilation going on. Customer support, however, was responsive when I had a question about network configuration, which was a plus. Overall, it's a practical option, but maybe not for super-heavy CI/CD if you're sensitive to every millisecond.

Are there any student discounts for CloudXMAC? trying to save some money for my app dev class.

S Stephanie Walker 2 weeks ago
I haven't seen any specific student discounts myself, but they sometimes have general developer discounts that might apply.

Not sure about a student specific one, but sometimes they run promos for new accounts or annual plans that are pretty good. Keep an eye on their site or sign up for their newsletter.

How do these guys stack up against MacStadium? price-wise and performance for a build server?

E Eric Rivera 1 week ago
CloudXMAC is generally cheaper, especially for shared instances. Performance is comparable for most use cases, but MacStadium felt a *tiny* bit snappier on a dedicated machine for me. CloudXMAC wins on value though imo.

Depends on your needs. For just a build server, CloudXMAC is totally fine and probably saves you some cash. MacStadium has more enterprise features maybe, but for a dev, CloudXMAC is good.

Anyone know where their data centers are? wondering about latency if I'm on the east coast US.

B Barbara Lopez 3 days ago
I think they have a few spots. I'm on the west coast and it's fine for me. You can probably ask them directly for specific locations if you're worried.

They have servers in different regions, pretty sure they cover US East and West at least. Latency is usually not an issue unless you're way out in the sticks.

Thinking of signing up for the shared mac instance, but not sure about performance. is it laggy for xcode builds?

A Ashley Lee 3 weeks ago
Nah, I've been using it for a few months, mostly for iOS stuff, and it's pretty snappy. Haven't noticed any major lag.

It's decent for most things. If you're doing super heavy builds or running a lot of simulators at once, you might feel it a bit, but for typical dev work, it's fine. I think they use pretty good hardware.

Can I upgrade my VM plan later if I need more resources? like if I start with a small one and my project grows?

E Elizabeth Anderson 3 weeks ago
Yep, you can. I started with a basic one and then upgraded to a bigger one with more RAM a few weeks in. Super easy to do, just contact support.

They let you upgrade. I'm not sure about downgrading though, but moving up to a higher tier is definitely possible.
